A family movie night can be an easy way to help generate interest and discussion about topics related to the Civil Rights Movement.

Movies

  • Eyes on the Prize (1987) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0092999/) Many libraries have this award-winning documentary available for loan.
  • Glory (1989) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0097441/) Although not about Martin Luther King, Jr., it does show the origins of some of the racial controversies he dealt with. Rated PG
  • Remember the Titans (2000) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0210945/) This movie takes place in 1971 at a high school that had recently integrated. Rated PG
  • Ray (2004) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0350258/) Depicts some of the racial struggles that Ray Charles overcame. Rated PG-13
  • The Great Debaters (2007) (www.imdb.com/title/tt0427309/) This movie tells the story of a debate club at a historically black college and their competition against Harvard in the 1930’s. Rated PG-13
