The GLCYD has established the Young Artist's Art Gallery to highlight area
children's art and creativity. One of the 40 Developmental
Assets is "Creative Activities." According to the 2000 Youth Asset
Survey, only 18% of our 8th, 10th, and 12th graders are regularily
involved i
n art activities. This gallery highlights children's visual art
as a way of reinforcing the importance of art expression and exposure
for young people.
Check out the school displays listed here on our web site. See the great work
that kids are doing as they express themselves
& explore a variety of art mediums.

Youth Art Experience - Dia De Muertos
Catherine Lange, who teaches art at Aspen Ridge Elementary School in Ishpeming,
recently traveled to Mexico to study Dia De Muertos, the Mexican
tradition of
"Day of the Dead." The trip was made possible through a $1,000 Professional
Development Award Lange was awarded at the Excellence in Education
Banquet
sponsored by the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development last spring.
Lange brought back what she learned and created the Aspen Ridge Dia De Muertos
project. About 500 students in Kindergarten through 5th grade created
art and
decorated the art room and halls. Students learned about the traditions
and the meanings of Day of the Dead customs. They built "ofrendas"
(altars) honoring four
famous artists they have studied this year: Frida Kahlo, Georgia
O'Keefe, Vincent Van Gogh, and Andy Warhol.
Students also made colorful "calaveras" (pictures of skulls) and festooned the hallways in bright "papel picados" (paper flags).
